P4(b) Advertising

Meaning & Purpose
For films to be successful, they have to be successfully marketed. Knowing the target audience of a film and the skillset and scope of the distribution company are crucial for good marketing techniques and a high-grossing film. Distribution channels are the companies that are responsible for marketing the film, packaging it into different versions, and making sure the right people receive copies.
Advertising relates to both getting people to see the film but also advertising other products through the film to make additional money. Transformers is notorious for product placement, which only got worse as the movies kept getting made. Here is a list taken from www.brandspotters.com that tells how many product placement deals Transformers made use of:
  • Burger King
  • Cadillac
  • CBS
  • Chevrolet
  • Cisco
  • eBay/PayPal
  • Gilmore Oil Company
  • GMG
  • Hp
  • Hummer
  • iPod
  • MacBook
  • Mountain Dew
  • Nokia
  • Panasonic
  • Pepto-Bismol
  • Pontiac
  • Porsche
  • Taco Bell
  • Toyota
  • USA Today
  • XM Satellite Radio
  • Yahoo
Many of these are cars, and as Transformers worked closely with Ford on the film it is not surprising that some of the cars they sell would be featured in the film. But this long list shows that there are multiple ways to make money from a film, including selling some of the film space so that other companies can advertise their products while audiences least suspect to find advertisements.
Following the release of the movie, toys were also released. The main transformers in the movies were made into modern day toys. These were marketed by showing clips of the movie alongside displays of the toys transforming and being played with. The toys would appeal to larger audiences, such as children, who would want to play with the toys but then also want to see the movie as a result of being drawn in by the toys.
The film was also advertised through billboards. These usually emphasized the action of the movie by having the transformers coming “out” of the billboard surrounded by explosions or dreary landscapes.
